Two insets include, at left, "The Colonies of the Gold Coast," and below that, Al Magreb (northwest Africa) "after Leo Africanus," the Moorish diplomat and author best known for his book Descrittione dell'Africa ("Description of Africa") describing the geography of North Africa.
