The fruit is brown and very tough skinned and generally picked before ripe. The Star pods are much stronger in Licorice flavour than Anise which is native to Europe. The pods look like an eight pointed star and are very aromatic. The history of Star Anise dates back to 100 BC, where it was used as a staple in cooking. The seed can take 15 years to produce the pods.
